Loss of control and support
Falling commonly reflects a sense that you are not fully supported, or that a situation is no longer in your hands. It often coincides with overwhelm, insecurity in a relationship or role, or a worry that you have overextended yourself. The body's lurch captures the feeling of a footing you cannot quite trust.
Fear of failure and 'falling short'
Language gives this dream away: we 'fall behind,' 'fall short,' 'fall from grace.' Falling dreams frequently track a fear of failing at something you care about, or of being judged for it. They are common before evaluations, launches, and any moment where the stakes of being seen are high.
The hypnic jerk
Some falling sensations as you drift off are a harmless physiological event called a hypnic jerk, unrelated to meaning. The falling dreams worth reflecting on are the narrative ones — falling from a height, off a structure, into water — where a story and an emotion are attached.
